Brits 'neglecting to take out life insurance'

Less than half of the UK's adult population have taken out life insurance cover, new research has found.

A poll carried out by Confused.com discovered that 60 per cent of the country's adults have not purchased life insurance, with those in Northern Ireland being the least likely to protect their loved ones in the event of their death.

In addition, the survey revealed that 69 per cent of those who do not have life insurance are married or in a relationship, while 35 per cent have a family.

The research also suggested that people with cover are reluctant to look around for the best deals on the market, as only 30 per cent have ever changed life insurance providers.

Matthew Lloyd, head of life insurance at Confused.com, commented: "Any change in life circumstances, like getting married, buying a new house, starting a family or even getting divorced should be a trigger for reviewing your life cover and ensuring you have the right level for your needs."

Back in March, research by moneysupermarket.com found that quitting smoking can reduce the total cost of a single life insurance policy by up to £1,685.
