Home thefts 'heat up during summer'

Home insurance customers have been warned about the increased risk of theft that comes with the summer months.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) pointed out that homeowners' tendency to leave doors and windows open in hot weather, as well as the number of people going on holiday, often causes a rise in burglaries.
Figures from the group show that 78,000 domestic burglary claims were handled by UK insurance providers last summer, equating to around 1,250 every day, with £84 million paid out.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance and heath at the ABI, commented: "Being aware of the risks and taking a few simple precautions will ensure that you do not become a victim of summer thieves."
The organisation recommended that people avoid leaving their doors and windows open when they are not in their home, while ladders and tools should be secured to prevent thieves from making use of them.
Earlier this month, household insurer Hiscox advised homeowners to ensure that all their property's external doors are fitted with a deadlock.
