Additional Travel Insurance Options
Below are brief descriptions of a number of optional levels of insurance that can be purchased with the majority of travel insurance packages, regardless of whether they are single-trip plans or annual multi-trip ones. The specifics of the policies listed below vary wildly between providers with some not even offering them at all, so if you are interested in applying for any of the following, be sure to check to see if any of these are available before applying.
• Insurance with Pre Existing Medical Conditions
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, then you can apply for insurance that will extend to provide cover for the specifics of your condition. Under such a policy, insurers will be ready to provide you with contact information for any specialists able to administer treatment in the countries you visit, and generally operate much the same as typical travel insurance would, but with terms and conditions adapted to suit other medical conditions not covered.
Generally, travel insurance with cover for pre-existing conditions is more expensive that typical travel insurance, but as a policyholder as you are duty bound to disclose any material facts to an insurance company anyway, it may turn out that your policy will automatically be adapted to include cover for your condition upon application, and as such, not all insurers list this as a separate policy.
Policies can be adapted with pre existing medical insurance to cover a range of common conditions including diabetes, haemophilia, heart conditions, cancer, and epilepsy.
If you don't declare your conditions and they are not covered in a general policy, it is likely should you need emergency medical treatment abroad, that you will be refused a claim, even if you argue that your treatment was nothing to do with a pre-existing condition.
• Breakdown Cover in Europe
With a number of car insurance and breakdown cover companies now providing cover which extends to the continent, you could save money on your travel insurance policy if you are planning on taking your own car with you when you go abroad. European breakdown cover typically applies to vehicles for one year, and can often double the size of the premium for breakdown cover, but some insurers will offer to reduce the overall cost of the breakdown cover if it is taken in conjunction with travel insurance.
• Motorcyclist
As most travel insurance policies are not able to cover for motorcycle related injury claims, insurers began selling separate motorcycle-specific travel insurance policies to touring motorcyclists or for those travelling through Europe. As with car cover, these types of insurance plans can often be taken in association with a European-wide breakdown cover plan for your bike, allowing for even more protection.
• Golfing Equipment
Even though golf is generally a relaxing sport not generally associated with injury, accidents do happen, and golfing equipment is far from cheap. But for an annual fee usually less expensive than a new set of clubs, you can insure all your equipment and be covered for pre-booked green fees if courses are closed.
